Afterlives brings together modern-day works that reckon with death and visualize the afterlife and Byzantine Egyptian funerary art and artifacts. On view are objects from 4th to 7th century to contemporary artists from the MET’s permanent collection including Gabriel Orozco, Taryn Simon, Tavares Strachan, Adrian Piper, Louise Bourgeois, Walid Raad, and Alwar Balasubramaniam.

Across a range of media, the vivid, urgent works on show – about friendship, love, desire, family, religion, violence, caste, community, protest – are deeply personal documents from a period of tremendous change. Tate Britain presents The 80s: Photographing Britain, a landmark survey which will consider the decade as a pivotal moment for the medium of photography. Bringing together nearly 350 images and archive materials from the period, the exhibition will explore how photographers used the camera to respond to the seismic social, political, and economic shifts around them.
