Celebrating India’s diverse culture and traditions through the works of contemporary Indian and global artists, ‘Sangam/Confluence’ marks the opening of the ARTHOUSE—a dedicated space for visual arts at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre—and celebrates India’s diverse cultural impulses and traditions.
For centuries, South Asia has been at the forefront of cultural multiplicity, making society proficient in breaking the language barrier time and again, in contrast to the European socio-linguistic backdrop where the idea of a ‘mother tongue’ is prominent. ‘Sangam/Confluence’ uses this metaphor to think about how artists do not confine themselves to a singular art-making language, medium, or style—but, rather, range across a spectrum of possibilities.
The inaugural exhibition curated by Ranjit Hoskote and Jeffrey Deitch bring together works of Indian and Western artists including Cecily Brown, Lynda Benglis, Ranjani Shettar, Bhupen Khakhar, Raqib Shaw and Anselm Kiefer.
