Out There brings together international artists from Britain, Australia, West Africa, Brazil, Japan, India and Poland. Some of the artists were already familiar to the Sainsbury Centre; others were invited to take part following research for the project. While some are experienced in making work outside, for others this is their first foray into the landscape. Though each of the artists makes very different work, they share an engagement with specific locations and materials and an interest in the use of organic or found materials.

In fall 2004 the Sainsbury Centre closed for building work.  The plans for Out There have grown from a desire to continue working with artists during the closure period and to extend the world art focus of the Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Collection into the parkland ‘out there’, beyond the building. Rather than curate an exhibition of existing sculpture that would be transported to the site, the Sainsbury Centre team wanted to bring artists to Norwich to work alongside one another, to make work very specifically for the UEA campus.
